Semantics of Informational Independence
نویسنده
چکیده
First-order languages of imperfect information (IF rst-order languages) have been introduced by Hintikka and Sandu 2]. These languages contained independent quantiiers and connectives of the form (9x=W); (8x=W); (_=W); (^=W) where W is a set of variables (x = 2 W), the values of which the quan-tiiers and the connectives on the left side of the slash are supposed to be independent of. The notion of a variable being free or bound is the same as in ordinary rst-order logic. In the formula (9x=W)' the variables in W are free. In Hintikka and Sandu 3] only sentences receive a semantic interpretation, and this is done in terms of games G('; A) of imperfect information played with an IF rst-order sentence ', and a model A. The game G('; A) is played by two players, Eloise (9) and Abelard (8): The standard example which goes back to Henkin (1961) is with ' of the form 8x9y8z(9w=fxg)Rxyzw: In this case the game can be pictured like this: 9 : b d=a 8 : a c Here a; b; c; d are individuals from the domain j A j of the model, and 'd=a' means that when choosing the individual d Eloise did not "know" which individual a Abelard chose earlier. The notion of "not knowing" is made explicit in the strategies of the players: they are deened only on earlier "known" choices of the opponent. In other words, a strategy for Eloise in the game consists of two functions f; g :j A j!j A j 1

On the semantics of informational independence
The semantics of the independence friendly logic of Hintikka and Sandu is usually defined via a game of imperfect information. We give a definition in terms of a game of perfect information. We also give an Ehrenfeucht-Fräıssé game adequate for this logic and use it to define a Distributive Normal Form for independence friendly logic.
متن کاملCharacterising Normal Forms for Informational Independence
The concept of informational independence plays a key role in most knowledge-based systems. Although de ned di erently in di erent contexts, its basic properties have been axiomatised by J. Pearl and his co-researchers. Pearl's axiomatic system o ers a set of inference rules for deriving new independence statements from an initial set of statements and as such allows for a normal form for repre...
متن کاملFrom IF to BI: a tale of dependence and separation
We take a fresh look at the logics of informational dependence and independence of Hintikka and Sandu and Väänänen, and their compositional semantics due to Hodges. We show how Hodges’ semantics can be seen as a special case of a general construction, which provides a context for a useful completeness theorem with respect to a wider class of models. We shed some new light on each aspect of the ...
متن کاملInformational independence: Models and normal forms
The concept of informational independence plays a key role in most knowledge-based systems. J. Pearl and his co-researchers have analysed the basic properties of the concept and have formulated an axiomatic system for informational independence. This axiomatic system focuses on independences among mutually disjoint sets of variables. We show that in the context of probabilistic independence a f...
متن کاملPartial-order Boolean games: informational independence in a logic-based model of strategic interaction
As they are conventionally formulated, Boolean games assume that players make their choices in ignorance of the choices being made by other players – they are games of simultaneous moves. For many settings, this is clearly unrealistic. In this paper, we show how Boolean games can be enriched by dependency graphs which explicitly represent the informational dependencies between variables in a ga...
متن کاملTruth functionality and measure-based logics
We present a truth-functional semantics for necessity-valued logics, based on the forcing technique. We interpret possibility distributions (which correspond to necessity measures) as informational states, and introduce a suitable language (basically, an extension of classical logic, similar to Pavelka’s language). Then we define the relation of “forcing” between an informational state and a fo...
